RICHARD L. GOETHALS, 62, of Elberta, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007. Funeral arrangements are pending and a complete obituary will follow in an upcoming edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. Published in the Record-Eagle on 10/1/2007. ------------------------------------------- Goethals, Richard Lee ELBERTA — Richard Lee Goethals, 62, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, at his home. He was born on June 27, 1945, the son of John and Berneice (Blood) Goethals, in Frankfort. The day of his birth at Anna Markum Hospital, all of the cribs were in use so the nurses took a drawer out of the dresser and made a bed. Richard attended Frankfort Schools from kindergarten to 12th grade. He played football in high school. As a child he had a paper route, caddied at the Downs, and attended Frankfort United Methodist Church until the family moved to Elberta, where he attended Elberta United Methodist. After graduation, Richard went to work at Elberta Packing Co. He then joined the United States Air Force to serve his country. After he left the Air Force, he got a job on the Ann Arbor Car Ferries, where he worked until the line was disbanded. He married, Evelyn Richards in 1975. They had two sons who preceded him in death. For the past 23 years, Richard worked for I and W Ind., in Traverse City until the company was moved to Mexico, and he got sick. Richard was very active in the Elberta United Methodist Church, the American Legion, The Elberta Volunteer Fire Department and the Gleaner Life Society; Crystal Lake Arbor, and Benzie County Back-up. He also taught 4-H. Richard was an assistant Boy Scout Leader, a member of Elberta Lions, Northwest Fire Fighters Association, Walk for Life and the Benzie Home Health Care Walk-a-thon. Richard enjoyed music (Christian and Country); he liked to go camping, fishing, hunting, golfing and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed making clocks. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; sisters, Helen (Steve) Fortine, Dorothy Goethals and Beverly Goethals; and brother, Frederick Goethals. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews; many cousins; aunt, Florance Goethals; mother-in-law, Opal Richards; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Richards. Richard was also preceded in death by his parents and sons, Tonny Lee and John Henry. Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff-Jowett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m., at the Elberta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Greg Culver officiating. Burial will be in Homestead Township Cemetery, with a military graveside services under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 221. Memorials may be directed to Elberta United Methodist Church, Frankfort-Elberta Fire Department, Benzie County Home Health Care or the American Legion Post No. 221.
