She was born Sept. 2, 1980, in Frankfort. Desiree was a 1999 graduate of Benzie Central High School. She loved her family and she enjoyed traveling, classical music and the arts. Desiree was a people person who had many friends she loved and with whom she enjoyed life. Desiree is survived by her father, George Novak of Honor; her mother and step-father, Shelia and Scott Smith of Beulah; her brother, Jason Novak of Atlanta, Ga.; her step-grandmother, Nancy Smith of Reed City; three step- sisters, Tasha Farris, Connie Smith and Chasity Witkop; a step-brother, Kevin Witkop; her aunts and uncles, Nola and Alan Piotrowski, Glenna and David Kelley, Tammy and Scott Williams, Rose and Steve Niehardt, Bess Butler and Mary and Larry Coombs; her nephew, Austin Farris; and numerous great-aunts, great uncles, and cousins. Desiree was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William and Bertha Novak; her maternal grandparents, Willard and Lois Erwin; and her step- grandfather, Howard Smith. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, June 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the funeral home.
