Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Alto, he was the son of Matthias and Henrietta R. (Yonker) Metternick. On May 22, 1948, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Shirley M. Beeler. A veteran of World War II, Matthew enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He also enjoyed working in his garage. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Susan (Frank) Birman of Lowell and Kathy (Michael) Stevens of Benzonia; sons, Steven (Barbara) Metternick of Ada and Ronald (Carrie) Metternick of Lowell; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne (Harry) Segard of Jenison; a sister- in-law, Eva Metternick of Alto and three brothers-in-law, Wendell Beeler of Bear Lake, Norris (Carol) Beeler of Wyoming, Mich. and Keith (Rose) Beeler of Comstock Park. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Kay. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Burial will be in Joyfield Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the American Heart Association or to the charity of one's own choice.
