Fire at Dayton

	Dayton, this county, had a pretentious conflagration yesterday, the origin of
which is unknown, but the supposition is the from the jar of the town hall’s
floor by dancers, it cracked the chimney of the building, which allowed sparks
to come through the bricks onto the floor below, and thus started a blaze.
	It happened at 4:30 in the morning and started in the Williams grocery, where
was also the post office and telegraph office. Nothing was saved from this
department but a mail pouch.  Frank Dalrymple lost all; the Woodmen of America
and Royal Neighbors were burned out, and not a book or memoranda of any kind was
saved.  The lodges’ charters burned.  From the dwelling house of Mr. Williams,
part of the household furniture was saved, such as was on the first floor.  In
the Dempsey building across the street, 16 window panes were cracked, and six in
the Odd Fellows hall above, and all the glass below.
	Dayton has no fighting apparatus of any kind, and had there been much of a
breeze, there is no telling what the result might have been. As it was, the
natives were scared, lest the elements would communicate to other places, and
everybody turned out with pails, forming a bucket brigade; and did the best they
could.
	The telephone office, and all on one side of the street was destroyed.
	The loss is estimated at about $5,000, and the total insurance is very small.
