Alexander, Esp. died in this village of consumption, after [an illness of] six months, May 4th, 1859. Mrs. Alexander has been a resident of Buchanan during the past eighteen years. Her friends and neighbors feel that they have sustained a loss in this dispensation of Providence but more particularly will she be missed in the family circle. She was a devoted wife, a kind and faithful mother, and a safe advisor. The writer of this article has been acquainted with her since the days of her childhood. Together we have rambled over the Allegany hills of New York, and along the valley of the “Lovely Genesee.” Together we attended the same village school, studied the same authors, shared in the same sports. This pertains to her younger days. Again, after an absence of many years, we have met. It has been our happy lot to share the hospitalities of the family during the past two years. We found her the same social friend as in years gone by. The Methodist Episcopal Church, of which she has been a faithful member during the last twenty five years, has lost one of its brightest ornaments in the place. Her pen was ever ready to defend its [illegible copy], it principles, its [illegible copy], which she loved and practiced so may years. Although she was firmly attached to the church of her choice, yet she was not bigoted, and could worship with all who love our Lord and Savior. Her religion had its empire in the heart and influenced the entire life. She was modest and unassuming, yet prompt in duty. Her mission of mercy, efficient and farreaching, was quiet and unobtrusive. Her reason remained the last. She was exceedingly patient during all of her sickness, not a murmur escaped her lips. A few moments before she died, she said “O, Lord, come quickly.” He gratified her desire and fifteen minutes past 6 o’clock, A.M. the disentralled spirit winged its upward flight to find a [illegible] congenial clime, and better home in the “the palace of angels and God”, Buchanan, May 4.
