JOSEPH IS DEAD AT 88 YEARS Funeral services were held in St. Joseph this afternoon for Mrs. Mary Lamb Anderson, 88, the first white child born in St. Joseph and who received her education in the Niles public schools, and was a graduate of the Niles High school. She died in Denver, Colo., last Monday; and the body arrived in St. Joseph yesterday. She was born April 5, 1839, near the site of the present coast guard station. While she was still a baby her father, Charles Lamb, moved the family by rowboat up the Paw Paw river to what is now known as the Clapsaddle farm. Due to trouble with Indians, her father later moved to the John Brown Place. Once, while he was away, an Indian attempted to kidnap the girl, but her mother, being an expert shot, rescued her. At the age of 12, she and her brothers and sisters were left orphans, and separated and went to live with guardians. Mary going to the home of a Baptist minister at Niles. In order to earn an education, she milked the family cow for 25 cents a week to buy clothes and books. She graduated from the Niles High School and taught school in Hagar and Galien. On October 23, 1862, Mrs. Anderson was married to C.J. Anderson, who died Feb. 23, 1919. They had two daughters, Margaret and Jessie. The latter died Dec. 27, 1882. Deceased lived in Berrien county for 80 years. "Aunt Mary" as the deceased was known, joined the Baptist church early in life and waas active in the church all her life. She also was a member of the L.O.T.M. and Ladies of the G.A.R. Mrs. Anderson died at the home of her daughter, Margaret, in Denver.
