About ten weeks ago Judge Chapman contracted a cold which proved to be incurable and which diminished his strength from the first. He gradually grew worse day by day and passed peacefully away at the time mentioned. Judge Chapman was one of the pioneers of St. Joseph, coming here from Massachusetts in 1848. He was born in Newmarket, N.H., in Aug. 1814. Soon after coming to St. Joseph he engaged in the lumber and saw mill business, but soon sold out to the late A.H. Morrison and removed to Chicago in 1853, where he resided until 1860, when he returned to St. Joseph. He was for some years in partnership with Mr. Morrison in the dry goods business; and during his earlier residence he was closely identified with the progress and prosperity of this village. He served a number of terms on the board of supervisors of Berrien county, and in 1868 was elected Probate Judge, holding that office for eight successive years. Deceased leaves two daughters, Mrs. Dr. Stratton, of this place, and Miss Minnie Chapman, who has faithfully cared for her father in his declining days. He was also a brother of Mr. Warren Chapman, who is in feeble health at present at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Smith. In the death of Judge Chapman St. Joseph loses an honored and exemplary citizen and his demise creates a feeling of profound sorrow throughout the village and wherever he was best known.—Benton Harbor Palladium of Saturday.
