Oct. 25, 1949, page 2, col. 8 RECEIVE WORD OF DEATH Three Oaks, Oct. 25-Word was received here Sunday by Mrs. Emma Thayer of the death of her brother, John Churchill, 74, a former Three Oaks resident. Churchill died suddenly late Saturday, in his home in Los Angeles, Calif. He was born in Three Oaks in May, 1875, the son of Dr. Owen Churchill, a pioneer, doctor and druggist here, and Mrs. Churchill. He was a graduate of Michigan State college and Cornell university and until his retirement worked for the steel industry. He and his wife returned to Three Oaks to live for four years after his retirement, returning to California 13 years ago. Besides his sister, he leaves his widow, Florence; a foster daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Vander Burg, and a granddaughter, Barbara, both of Torrence, Calif. Galien River Gazette, Thurs. Oct. 27, 1949, page 1, col. 3 John Churchill Dies in Los Angeles Word came to Mrs. Emma Thayer Sunday of the death of her brother, John Churchill, in Los Angeles, Calif. Death came suddenly Sunday night. Mr. Churchill was born 74 years ago last May in the old family home where Mrs. Thayer still lives. He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Owen Churchill who came here at the time of their marriage and where Dr. Churchill served the community for many years as one of the pioneer doctors who made his long trips on horse back. Mr. Churchill graduated from Michigan State College and Cornell University and was connected[sic] with the steel industry until his retirement. He came back to Three Oaks for about four years and both he and Mrs. Churchill were very active in church and civic affairs during their stay and were greatly missed when they returned to California some 13 years ago.
