Mr. Coveny was best known, perhaps, by reason of his religious or, rather, irreligious views. He was a total unbeliever in anything held by Christians or deists and he had forcible and rather offensive ways of making his opinions known. He erected a monument in the cemetery at Buchanan a few years ago and it now marks his last resting place. On that monument were inscriptions so sacreligious, even blasphemous, from a christians point of view that serious objections were offered to his putting it there on that “God’s here.” As no forbidding law existed it was planted and it has not been well used since it was located there. The old man was about 92 years old and had accumulated a very considerable estate and leaves about half a score of heirs to claim it. He was a peculiar character and his like may not be seen again in these parts for a long time. Niles Daily Star, Friday, Feb. 12, 1897, page 2 JOS. COVENEY, He Died Last Night at the Age of Ninety-fiv Years. MONUMENT LONG ERECTED He Was a Follower of Paine and an Infidel BUCHANAN, Mich., Feb. 12—Jos. Coveney, living six miles north of Buchanan, died last night of old age. He was 95 years old, and a native of Cork. In 1870, he astonished the people by erecting an expensive marble monument on his cemetery lot in Buchanan, which monument was covered with infidel inscriptions. He was a follower of Paine. Mr. Coveney left one of the largest estates in Berrien county.
