Derby Born Here in 1838 Passes Away; Was State’s Oldest Mason DETROIT, July 9—Nathan F. Derby, who left Niles, Mich. In 1853 to mine gold in California, died last night in the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Wells. He as believed to be the oldest Mason in Michigan. Derby’s father, Oren Derby, came to Detroit in 1826 and shortly afterward built the first hotel in Ypsilanti. He moved to Niles, where Nathan Derby was born. The two left on March 6, 1853, for California. Oren Derby was killed by a stage coach in San Francisco two years after and Nathan returned to Michigan with $3,000 in gold dust they had accumulated. Nathan Derby, a harness maker, jointed the Masonic Lodge April 5, 1866, in Niles. He Subsequently moved to Greenville, and during the last 10 years had lived there. Funeral services will be conducted by the Masonic lodge in Greenville Friday.
