March 5, 1836, and came the same year with his parents, Charlie and Mahalia Evans to Michigan. Mary J. Scott became his companion on life’s journey Feb. 10, 1857 in Berrien Co. Michigan. She was born in this county Feb. 15, 1841 she was a daughter of George and Mary Scott both of whom have gone to their reward. Mrs. and Mrs. Evans are the parents of three children, William, Caroline and Harriet, deceased. Mr. Evans was 27 years old, and was engaged in farming when the war clouds rolled up from the south. He was enrolled Feb. 15, 1864 at Buchanan, as a private in Co., C 12th Michigan V.I. June 1864 he was confined in a hospital at Little Rock, Ark. three weeks suffering from scurvy. September 1864 he was furloughed for sixty days and he reported for duty at Detroit, Michigan. In Nov. 1864 he was detailed at that place as hospital ward, seven months. He took part in several skirmishes, did scouting, and was in the battle of Clarendon, and was honorably discharged June 28, 1865, at Detroit. He had three brothers in action, Charles, Freemon whose right arm was shot off at Baton Rogue[sic], and George. Mr. Evans was Q.M. Sergt. Of Perrott Post, he has held several offices of trust, been constable 4 years, deputy sheriff 4 years, treasurer 8 years and marshall 2 years. He was a painter by trade, and resided in Buchanan till death which came last night at 12 o’clock. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock from the house, Rev. W.J. Douglass.
