Gifford was born in Cayuga County, New York, August 28, 1859. When a boy five years old he came with his parents to Berrien county, and was a resident of the county until the time of his death. He died April 12, 1915, being 55 years 7 months and 15 days old. The father, mother and one brother and one sister preceded him the Spirit Land. He is survived by his widow, son Carrol and three sisters, Mrs. Knight of Baroda, Michigan, Mrs. Clarr, of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Buffet, of Toledo, Ohio. In December, 1884, he was married to Lillie Storick, and settled on his farm two miles west of this village, which has been his home nearly all his married life. To his union were born three children, two dying in infancy, one son, Carrel, surviving, who now resides on the farm. Soon after his marriage he became a member of the Baptist Church of this place, and when health would permit was an attendant at the meeting of the Men’s Personal Workers’ League. When last attending one of these meetings, although he could not express himself in words, yet in act and deed confessed Christ as the Saviour of the world. In February, 1895, he became a member of Berrien Springs Tent Knights of the Maccabees, and held a certificate in that Order. He was an honored and esteemed member until the time of his death. Ed. Gifford as he was familiarly known, was very optimistic always looking on the bright side, always having a word of cheer for everyone. He was honored and revered by all his neighbors and friends, and his memory will be held in thoughtful remembrance. May it be our happy lot to meet the dear one gone before. Interment at Rose Hill cemetery 14th April, 1915.
