Mr. Habel was the eldest son of John and Marguerite Habel and has always resided in this community. On Jan. 20, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Mathilda Pauline Wangerin of Three Oaks, Mich. To this union were born five children, three sons and two daughters. They are as follows: Clarence and Freddie who have passed on, Arthur Habel of Three Oaks, Mrs. William Bates of Buchanan, and Mrs. Arthur Meyers of DesPlaines, Ill. On Nov. 3, 1905 the mother passed away, and on July 21, 1906, Mr. Habel was united in marriage to Sarah Ellen Barnhart, who survives him. He is also survived by one sister and two brothers, Miss Sophia Habel of Chicago, and John and Frank Habel of Three Oaks, also nine grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Habel had always been a respected farmer and was a Republican in politics and has served on the School Board in this locality. He had held the office of Highway Commissioner at various times and was holding this position at the time of his death. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was also a member of the Men's Bible class of the M.E. Church, and was always active in Sunday School work. His great pleasure was to take his grandchildren to Sunday School. He was a kind husband and a loving father, and will be missed in the community as well as in his home.
