Berrien County Record 
The Berrien County Record carried the obituary of Gertrude Herman:  “Gertrude 
Grace Herman Buchanan—Gertrude Grace Herman, 89, of 300 Cleveland St., 
Dowagiac, died Tuesday, Dec 17, at Dowagiac Nursing Home.  She was a 
homemaker, born July 8, 1913 in St. Joseph.  She had lived in Dowagiac since 
1991, coming from Galien.  She was active in the Apostolic Lighthouse in 
Dowagiac.  On June 11, 1931, in South Bend, she married Wilson Herman.  He 
died in 1986.  Survivors include a son, Gary (Barbara) Herman of Buchanan; 
three daughters, Clara Bonham and June (Lynn) Lear, both of Buchanan and 
Maxine (James) Wheetley of Niles; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-
grandchildren.  A son, Lawrence Herman, died in 1934.  Services were held 
Friday, Dec. 20 in Hoven Funeral Home.  Burial was in Galien Cemetery.  
Memorials are to Berrien County Cancer Service, 7301 Red Arrow Hwy., 
Stevensville, MI.”  DOD 17 Dec 2002
