Susan Kimmel bas born at Stayestown, Pa. April 7, 1822. In 1832 she came to this place with the family of her father, the late George Kimmel. In 1840 she was married to the late Dr. Phillip Kephart at Somerset, Pa. and in 1844 she returned with her husband to this place. Here the young couple began the work which rendered their long lives notable and useful. To them were born ten children—five each of the sons and daughters. Of these but four survive. They are Mrs. R.D. Dix, Henry and George of this place and Walter of Petoskey. In 1880 Dr. Kephart died and his widow has lived for her children. It is greatly to the credit of the doctor and his wife that the large family they reared grew up to maturity honest, will[sic] conducted people. No breath of censure of scandal ever attached to either of them. Home influences where such as to keep them in paths that led in the right direction. The great farm just on the border of the village has been so conducted as to be a credit to its owner—Mrs. Kephart—and to some extent a model for others to copy. For several years Mrs. Kephart has made her home with one or another of her children, largely with Mrs. Dix, except during the years that family resided in Lansing. For the two years last past the good old mother has been showing signs of a break-down. Until then she had retained her mental and physical vigor to a remarkable extent. At last the years told on her and would not longer be denied their victim. Last Thursday, March 1, 1906, she died and was buried Saturday from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dix, Rev. Edwin Tench conducting the service. Thus ended a long and useful life. But very few of the residents of this township were here when she came and they are near the end of their lives. In fact but few of all who have lived in the township were here when she came. She has seen the conversion of a great forest into fair farms and her husband did their share toward the transition. The surviving children and a large number of her former neighbors and associates were present at the burial and they attested by their presence the high regard in which the deceased pioneer was held.
