Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Boyd Funeral Home, a Kraig A. Pike Family Service in Bridgman, where friends may meet with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service or the Christian United Church of Christ, Sawyer. Friends and family may Share a Memory with the family at www.BoydFuneral.com Bernice was born May, 18, 1909 in Sawyer. She was the 2nd oldest of six children of the late Eather and Clara O’Barton of Sawyer. Bernice graduated with a four-year degree from Western Michigan University and became a teacher in 1929, and began teaching at Painter School in Weesaw Township. She then taught elementary school at Bridgman Elementary School and became the first woman principal there. Bernice retired from that position in 1974. She was well known in the community for her work in the school system. The Bridgman School dedicated a new playground in her name in 1991. Bernice was very active at Christian United Church of Christ, Sawyer and was instrumental in the restoration of its bell tower. Bernice had no children but she raised her nephew, William Tucker, as her own when William’s mother died when he was eight-years old. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lagerquist, in 1968. Survivors include: her nephew, William Tucker; a sister, Dorothy O’Barton Wirth; and many nieces and nephews.
