William McGowen was born in Ottawa Co., Ohio, February 3, 1823, and died in
Buchanan, Mich., Aug. 19, 1898; aged 75 years.  In September 1844 he was married
to Margaret Dunham of Elmore, Ohio.  Of the eight children born to them but
three are now living, Mrs. James Patterson and L.D. McGowen of Buchanan, and
Allman McGowen of Indiana.  A daughter, Mrs. Ed. Cooper died in Buchanan. 
Margaret McGowen died Oct. 26, 1882.  In the fall of 1883 he was married to
Julia Aldrich of Plymouth, Ind. in which place they spent thirteen years of
quiet happiness.  After the death of his second wife in 1896 he came to Buchanan
to live.  The 16th of August 1897 he was married to Mrs. Sarah Cowels, an old
resident of Buchanan who died July 8th, 1898, but six weeks previous to his
death.  In his early manhood he united with the United Brethern Church and has
been an earnest consistent Christian.  Although suffering intensely, he bore it
patiently and with great fortitude.  He often spoke to his daughter of death and
said it did not seem like dying but just like going home.
