July 20, 1926, p. 6 CLARA ELIZABETH MITCHELL Mrs. Clara Elizabeth Mitchell, lifelong resident of Berrien county, dropped dead at her home near Berrien Springs, Mich., at eight o’clock Monday morning, July 12, 1926. Mrs. Mitchell was apparently in the best of health. They having parted in the morning by her daughter, Julia, leaving for her day’s work picking berries, and the son Merton, to mail a letter, and on returning missed his mother. He began searching and found her in the chicken yard where she had went to feed the chickens. The neighbors came at once to the children’s assistance, and Dr. Burton Giddings from Niles was summoned but life was found to be extinct upon his arrival. Death was caused by apoplexy. Clara Elizabeth Stoner, daughter of John and Mary Stoner, was born May 3, 1866, in Weesaw township, Berrien county, Michigan and passed away at her home very suddenly, July 12, 1926, at 8 a.m. aged 60 years, 2 months and 9 days. She went to school and spent her entire life in and around this vicinity. On September 25th, 1882, she was united in marriage to Julian A. Mitchell. To this union, 13 children were born, three daughters and four sons having preceeded her in death. Mrs. Elnora Blevins of LaPorte, Ind., Miss Lura Mitchell of Michigan City, Ind., Mrs. Lewis Lolmaugh, Miss Julia Mitchell, Elsa and Merton Mitchell of Buchanan, survive her. Deceased was a member of the Brethern Church for many years. Mr. Mitchell passed away November 9th, 1923. Besides her four daughters and two sons, she leaves to mourn her departure: three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Reid of Peach Orchard, Arkansas; Mrs. Daisy Reid and Mrs. Jane Weaver of Buchanan; one brother, Jasper Stoner of Galien, ten grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the Brethern Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, July 14, 2926. Rev. Eli Roose of LaPorte, Ind., officiated. Interment was made in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mitchell, 60, died at her home south of Berrien Center yesterday following a stroke of paralysis, after having been confined to her bed for several weeks. The body was taken to the home of her son, Elze[sic] Mitchell, in Buchanan, where funeral services will be conducted.
