March 24, 1903, page 3 ABNER MITCHELL Picturesque Character Passed Away last Midnight Abner Mitchell, aged 66 years, died at his home on west Sycamore street last midnight, of Bright’s disease. Since his residence here Mr. Mitchell has been picturesque character. His religious talks on the street corners during the arm weather attracted considerable attention. He was a Christian gentleman and had many friends. He has several brothers and sisters, but they cannot be found. In 1889 he was ordained a preacher of the A.M.E. church at South Bend, and at times he officiated in the local A.M.E. church. The remains will be held here until Friday or Saturday, when they will be conveyed to South Bend for interment, the funderal services to be held from the A.M.E. church at South Bend, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The deceased was a member in good standing of Austin Post, G.A. R., South Bend. Niles Republican II, Thurs., March 26, 1903, page 6 Rev. Abner Mitchell Rev. Abner Mitchell, an active minister of the A.M.E. church died this morning at his home on West Sycamore street, Mr. Mitchell had been a sufferer from Bright’s disease for a long time but his death was rather unexpected. The deceased was a member of the G.AR. at South Bend which post will have charge of his funeral. He was born sixty-six years ago near Brownsville, Miss., and came to Niles some time ago. He afterwards removed to South Bend, returning to Niles about three years ago. Mr. Mitchell conducted a mission at the corner of Sycamore and Front street for some time. The funeral will be held Sunday at two o’clock in South Bend.
