	Chester Niles, the subject of this sketch, died at the residence of Charles D.
Wright, in Berrien township, on last Sunday, the 20th last, aged 63 years, 9
months and 10 days.  The deceased was a native of Madison county, New York, but
for the last forty years, or more resided in this county.
	Mr. Niles was a soldier in the Rebellion, being a member of Company L, 2nd
Michigan Cavalry, from which service he was honorably discharged on September
16, 1862.
	The affliction which caused his death was a cancer on the left side of his
neck, and was kindly taken care of by Mr. and Mrs. Wright, who did all in their
power to restore his health and make him comfortable, and their attention to him
during his long period of sickness and helplessness was appreciated, and as far
as possible, will be rewarded.
	The deceased was a man of good natural endowments, which by education and
general reading, placed him in advance of most men in his station, but the demon
of strong drink had obtained such control over him that his usefulness for the
higher positions of life was destroyed.  The funeral services were conducted by
Rev. J. Surran, at Morris chapel on Monday afternoon, and the remains were laid
to rest in the cemetery by friends and neighbors.

In 1880 census, he is living with Nye family in Berrien twp. as a "Boarder".
Birth abt. 1820 in NY, father born in Mass, mother in Conn. In 1870, Chester
Niles, age 50, born NY, and Diantha Niles, age 37, born NY, are living in
Charles Stafford household in Niles, as labor/domestic. 1850 in Madison Co., NY
