OLMSTEAD DEAD; FUNERAL RITES SATURDAY Milburn H. Olmstead, 90, who was one of Berrien county’s pioneer manufacturers, died at midnight Tuesday, at his home on South Elm Street. A native of New York state, Mr. Olmstead came to Three Oaks in 1877 when he bought a saw mill and tract of land in section 8 of the township and began the manufacture of broom, hoe and rake handles. This business prospered for a number of years until sold by its owner in 1904. During 1882, the manufacturer sold 100 carloads of his product. Mr. Olmstead was born in Senneti township, Cayuga county, New York, on October 13, 1837, the fourth in a family of eleven children of whom he was the last to died. His father and mother were Abijah and Elizabeth Clark Olmstead. His wife, Helen Stevenson of New York state, to whom he was married in 1885, was a descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson. After the death of his wife a years ago last September, Mr. Olmstead lived alone until last fall when his health began to fail and a nephew, Charles Shaver, come from Elkhart to make his home with the aged man. Besides this nephew, three nieces survive, Miss Emma Stevenson, a school teacher in South Bend; Miss Jessie Stevenson of Grand Rapids, and another niece whose home is in Iowa. After funeral services Saturday at 1 o’clock at the Connelly chapel in Three Oaks, the body will be taken to Adamsville for burial. Adamsville Cemetery is located in Section 12 of Adamsville Road and May Street, 1 & 12/2 miles south of US 12 in Ontwa Township, Cass County. Row 16 in listing online.
