Yesterday, the 7th last, the burial of David White Platt, took place at Berrien. An insidious disease, the disease of the heart, silently and gradually prepared the way for a sudden death. The second day before his death, he wrote a business letter at his place of business, and walked to his residence. The deceased was born in Pittsfield, Mass., and came to Berrien twenty-three years ago, where he has since resided nearly all the times as a member of the business firm of J.N. and D.W. Platt. Many years of extended acquaintance, combined with many rare and estimable traits of character, made him greatly beloved and highly esteemed. By his death Berrien has lost a citizen not easily replaced, and yesterday the citizens of the place and the surrounding country attended the burial with sadness and solemn thoughtfulness. As no building in the place, except the Court House, could at all accommodate the people assembled to attend the burial services, that building was used for the occasion and was densely filled, while many remained outside unable to gain an entrance. All the business houses were closed, and the day was devoted to the memory of the deceased. The address at the Court House was deliveryd[sic] by the Rev. Wm. Lusk, Jr. Rector of Trinity Church, in this place, on the transient and permanent in life, with an appropriate application suggested by the occasion. The ceremonies were conducted by the Masonic Fraternity, of which body the deceased had been a worthy member during the past twenty years. A vast concourse of citizens attended the remains to the grave, and in deepest sympathy with the afflicted relatives said “farewell” to the departed brother, friend and citizen.
