George H. Richards, February 27, 1845. Eight children were born to them six of whom are still living, and with one exception, were at the bedside of their dying mother, the youngest child, George H. Richards of Minneapolis, Minn. being unable to come. Capt. Richards moved his family to Buchanan in the fall of 1854, and for many years lived on his farm on which the Axle Works now stands. In 1865 owing to Mrs. Richards failing health they removed to Buchanan where in 1888 Capt. Richards passed away. Mrs. Richards has been an invalid for many years, and has always born her suffering with unwavering patience and fortitude. For the past 13 years she has been cared for and nursed by her eldest child, Mrs. Sarah Morris. Everything that medical science and loving care could do was done to prolong her life. At the early age of 15 she gave herself to the service of the Lord and has since lived a humble consistent Christian life. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church remaining a member of that body until her death. Of her it can be truly said “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Impressive funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock from her late home, and was attended by a large number of our citizens who all felt that they had sustained a personal loss in the death of “Grandma” Richards as her friends loved to call her. Her sweet and lovable character was exemplified by the beautiful floral offerings which nearly hid the casket from view. The services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Potter of Dowagiac, assisted by Rev. W.J. Douglass and J.F. Bartness, the Presbyterian church choir rendering appropriate music. Interment was made at Oak Ridge cemetery.
