Nov. 25, 1886, page 5 Niles Republican II, Thurs. Nov. 25, 1886, page 5 On last Saturday morning, the wife of Uriah Shaffer, of this village, very suddenly and quietly passed away. Her sickness had been of only a few days’ duration, but the disease (the asthma) was of such a nature that her physicians could afford her no relief. She was born in Ontario Co., Canada, in 1842, and came with her husband to this township in 1869, where she was since lived except seven years. She was a member of the relief corps of the George G. Meade post No., 36, of this place, and six members of the post served as her pall bearers. Her funeral was attended at the Berrien Centre church on the 21st inst. Rev. S. Adams officiated. The house was filled to its utmost capacity, some being unable to get inside. Additional Comments: This is listed under “Berrien Centre Ballots” so “this township” apparently refers to Berrien township. Buried at South Union cemetery, Berrien twp., per the transcription by Daundra Baker in 2008. Eliza Shaffer was born about 1845 and died age 44y Nov 20, 1886., w/o Uriah Shaffer.
