April 14, 1880, page 5 Niles Mirror, Wed. April 14, 1880, page 5 Joseph Stephens, one of the oldest settlers in this county, died on Saturday morning in his chair. He got up as well as usual, prepared his horse to ride to town, sat down in his chair and said he did not feel well and after a short time said he felt worse. His wife stepped out a moment and when she returned, he was dead in the chair. Cause, heart disease. His history has heretofore been given in these columns. St. Joseph Valley (Ind.) Register, April 14, 1880, page 5, column 4 Death of Old Citizen of Buchanan On Saturday Joseph Stephens, of Buchanan, a wealthy farmer, died suddenly. He was in his barn, feeling well, laughing with others upon the election. He went to the house and complained of having heartburn. His wife administered a dose of medicine and went to the well for a pail of water. On returning she found him sitting in a chair, dead. Mr. Stephens was 82 years old, one of the first settlers of the county, and a highly respected citizen. Niles Democrat, Sat., Jan. 1, 1881, page 2, column 3 In listing of deaths during 1880: "April 10. Joseph Stevens, Niles, 82 years." Additional Comments: Joseph Stephens and wife Susannah came from North Carolina. Name is also spelled Stevens in some records. The Stephens farm was located in Niles twp. but nearer to Buchanan which is also a source of some confusion.
