When six years old, he, with his parents moved to Cincinnati, O., and 12 years later he removed to LaPorte, Ind. In 1840, he moved to Terre Coupee prairie and took up 160 acres of government land, the Indians having a trail through the claim at the time. The same year he was married to Miss Louisa Buck of Hampshire county, Mass., and together with the courage characteristic of our forefathers, they endured the hardships and privations of pioneer life. Three sons were born to them, two of whom, Augustus F., and Cyrus B., after arriving at the age of manhood, died. The youngest, Clarence, with his wife and three children, are still living. The mother died May 14, 1889, loved and mourned by all. He moved to Niles in 1868, remaining seven years, when he moved to Buchanan and engaged in the drug business, afterward returning to his farm, where he lived until 1890, when he was married to Miss Emma Babcock, who survives him. He again moved to Niles and remained until his death. He has been a great sufferer and everything was done for him that willing hands and loving hearts could do, but that fell destroyer claimed him and after a long and useful life, surrounded by a sorrowing wife and loving friends, January 12, 1897, he died.
