Sept. 3, 1887, page 3 St. Joseph [Mich.] Herald, Sat. Sept. 3, 1887, page 3 Obituary Charles B. Wilkinson The death of this worthy young citizen occurred about midnight on Friday last. He was ill but a little over a week. At times it seemed that he would recover but his disease—inflammation of the bowels and an abscess—could not be arrested, although faithful effort was made by his physicians and family for his relief. As the end approached he bade all a last good-bye and passed peacefully to his rest. Deceased was born in St. Joseph on Sept. 27, 1862. He was a member of the firm of Wilkinson Bros., and by earnest efforts well aided by his brother Frank had built up within a few years a large business here. He was a good business man and citizen and was much respected by a large circle of acquaintances. He was unmarried and resided with his widowed mother on Main street. His funeral occurred on Sunday, from his late home, under the auspices of Holden Temple, P.C. of which was a member, Rev. J. V. Hickmott officiating at the services, and the measure of esteem in which the deceased was held was indicated in the fact that it was one of the most largely attended funerals ever seen in St. Joseph. A special train brought many Patriarchs form the north to attend the services, the remains of the departed being followed to the cemetery by the following: Hebron Temple No. 1, Grand Rapids, J.P. Babcock, Chief Captain, and 21 men; Hartford Temple No. 15, Hartford, Wm. Horton, Jr., Chief Captain, and 10 men; Holden Temple No. 13, St. Joseph, A. Shepard, Chief Captain, and 25 men; about seventy teams. The line was in command of T.C. Putnam, Colonel 1st Michigan Battalion P.C. The pall bearers were from the home Circle—Messrs. A.D. Kent, Dr. Ray, F.L. Pixley, Lee S. Willson, W.F. Sesser, E.F. Platt. The turn-out was a deserved tribute to their companion. The floral display was very fine.
