Berrien County Record 
The Berrien County Record carried the obituary for Dorothy Wirth and it 
reads:  “Dorothy Wirth  Weesaw Township-Dorothy Wirth, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 
1, 2008 at Caretal Inns of Lakeland.  She was born Nov. 10, 1911 in New 
Buffalo, to the late Eather and Clara (Brant) O’Barton and grew up in Sawyer.  
When she was a young girl, she rang the bell at the Christian United Church of 
Christ in Sawyer signifying the end of World War I and recently had the 
opportunity to ring the bell again.  In 1930 she was a member of the second 
graduating class of New Troy High School and continued her education at 
Berrein County Normal, earning her teaching certificate.  She married Clarence 
Wirth in Buchanan on July 29, 1933 and taught at Coveny School from 1932 until 
1934.  Mrs. Wirth enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, playing the organ and 
caring for her family.  She was an excellent cook and could easily create a 
meal for her family or for 40 farm hands.  Survivors include her children, 
John (Laverne) Schultz of Albuquerque, N.M., Guy (Darlene) Barker of Houston, 
Texas and Gary (Jill) McConnell of St. Joseph; 11 grandchildren; seven great-
grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Henry Wilson of charlotte, Mich.  
Her husband, Clarence, died in 1984 after 51 years of marriage.  She was also 
preceded in death by her daughter, Carol and he husband, David Metz; son Rick; 
sisters, Bernice and Leodelle; and brothers, Floyd, Lyle and Gerald.  Services 
were held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Christian United Church of Christ.  
Interment followed at New Troy Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the M.D.
