A week ago last Thursday, Mr. Womer contracted a slight cold, to which he gave but little attention. On the following Saturday evening he grew worse, and lockjaw suddenly developed. A doctor was summoned, and everything done to alleviate his suffering, but death finally ensued. Wilson Womer was born in Perry township, Snyder county, Pa., Nov. 23, 1856. Died in Bertrand township, Berrien county, Mich., Oct. 1st, 1898. In 1876 Mr. Womer came in Michigan where he was married to Miss Ella J. Rauch, February 22, 1880. He was a highly respected citizen, an obliging neighbor and a kind husband. His funeral was perhaps the largest ever held on Portage Prairie. It took place at the Portage Prairie Evangelical church, October 4th, at 2 o’clock, p.m., conducted by Rev. F.C. Berger, assisted by Revs. F.Koehler and W.H. Wagner. The Presbyterian choir of Buchanan furnished the music. He leaves a sorrowing wife with whom he spent nearly nineteen years in happy wedlock. Three of his brothers from Pennsylvania, beside his brother residing on the Prairie, were present besides numerous relatives and friends. Also: Niles Weekly Mirror, Wed. The deceased was a brother of Peter Womer and came here from Pennsylvania, his old home, to work for his brother a number of years ago. In 1880 he married Miss Ella, daughter of Wm. Rough. He is survived by his wife, six brothers and two sisters. In Mr. Womer’s case lockjaw was the result of a severe cold. In his death the community suffers the loss of one of its best citizens. He was a kind neighbor and husband and a favorite with all. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. from the residence and at 2 o’clock at the Portage Prairie Evangelical church, where interment will take place.
