Footnote: In 1860 you will not find Benton Harbor town or City, which later became known as the twin city to St. Joseph: Benton Harbor - founded by Henry C. Morton, Sterne Brunson and Charles Hull, all had schools named after them. Benton Harbor was mainly swampland and was bordered by the Paw Paw River, through which a canal was built, hence the "harbor" in the city's name The canal was opened in about 1862. In the early 1860's , the settlement was given the name of Brunson Harbor. In 1865 the name of the settlement was changed to Benton Harbor in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri Senator who helped Michigan achieve statehood. 1866, Benton Harbor was organized as a village 1891 was incorporated as a city.
