An Abused Wife
She Recites Her Troubles in a Bill for Divorce

Mrs. Laura Letcher, of Niles, has filed a bill in the circuit court commencing
proceedings for a divorce from her husband Theron Letcher. The bill is a verbose
document and contains sundry sensational allegations.
The couple were married June 8, 1873, and have a family of four children, two of
whom are young ladies and the other infants. Mrs. Letcher recites that for the
past five years she has suffered continued torture and cruelty at the hands of
her husband. She has been seized by the hair of her head and pulled about with
great force and violence and as a result of the brutal treatment of the husband
and father in punishing them by personal attacks and by thrusting upon them
heavy manual labor the wife and daughters it is alleged, have suffered great
injury to their health and are unable to earn a living for themselves.  On one
occasion, it is recited, the husband beat his wife and daughter unmercifully
because they refused to eat asparagus on Sunday.

   Mrs. Letcher alleges that under threat of personal violence from her husband
she conveyed to him a considerable parcel of land which she owned at the time of
their marriage. The complaint prays for an order from the court setting aside
the conveyance and granting her the custody of the two infant children. She has
been granted an injunction restraining her husband from disposing of any of his
property until after the divorce proceedings are ended.
