Aug. 25, 1898, page 1 “A Well Kept Secret” Two young people, well-known and with a host of friends in Buchanan, have demonstrated to their friends that they can keep a secret. The young couple referred to are, or rather were, Miss Ethel E. Curtiss and Mr. Joseph L. Richards, jr., for there are now Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Richards, jr. They were married on July 4, 1898, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by Rev. Oliver H. Chapin, pastor of the Perseverance Presbyterian church. For nearly two months they kept their secret faithfully, but last week the young bridegroom, determined to acquaint his parents of the fact, before leaving on Saturday for Coloma, where his bride was residing, Mr. Richards arranged with one of his most intimate friends to leave a letter, after he had started, at the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Richards. In the letter the young man “owned up” to his parents and requested that they call him up over the telephone that evening and advise him as to their views regarding the marriage. His parents were greatly surprised at the news contained in the letter but, like the sensible people they are, telephoned to the anxious groom that, while they would have preferred to have had the marriage deferred on the account of their youth, they had the highest regard for the young lady of his choice, and would be glad to have him bring her back with him and they would welcome her as a daughter. Accordingly, the young couple came, Sunday evening, over the “Benton Harbor Route”, and are now “at home” to their many friends at No. 95 Front street. The RECORD is pleased to join with the other friends in wishing the young people a happy and prosperous journey through life.
