LEONARD, in this place, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the 70th year of his age. Deceased had practiced medicine for over 45 years, most of the time in this vicinity. A short time before the war he went to Kansas as a pioneer for freedom. During the war he served as assistant surgeon of the 16th Kansas Calvary, being promoted to surgeon of the same regiment. He was a learned and skillful physician, although for several years past, owing to his age, he had not been in active practice. The mental makeup that carried him to Kansas and into battle for freedom and right, remained with him during his whole life. His sole aim was to see and do the right. He never swerved an atom from his convictions of right for the sake of influence or business. He died as he lived, an honest man. (Published in 14 May paper) 21 May 1895 - Dr. Edward Twiss who died at Union City on Sunday was well known to the Department of Interior officials at Washington by reason of his efforts on behalf of the Pottowatamie indians of Michigan. He had secured one or two large appropriations for them and another claim of something like $15,000 is now pending. He looked after the welfare of the indians upon the reservation near Athens with almost paternal solicitude and they repaid the care with almost dog-like devotion. He was the arbiter in all of the controversies and his decision in any matter was looked upon as infallible. Dr. TWISS was a unique man in many ways, but possessed the esteem of a wide circle of friends. There is deep mourning among the Pottowatamies over his death.
