Grand Rapids Herald September 18, 1899
Ionia, Mich. Sept 18 - John Smith sent from Calhoun county on June 22, 1898, for
burglary, for two years escaped from the state house of correction Saturday
night through the chapel cupola by means of bed sheets tied together. He was a
trusty janitor and his sentence would have expired in February next. No trace o
fhim has been discovered.
