Freeling Alexander Avery's obituary-newspaper unknown Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, January 24, 1937 SURNAMES: AVERY, KEMP, RAYMOND, BAKER, CHRISTMAN, KELSER, MORE FORMER JUSTICE DIES OF STROKE Freeling Alexander Avery, 90, one of Marshall's oldest and best known residents, died at 10:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 605 West Green. Mr. Avery had been in poor health for two or three years and had been critically ill since suffering a stroke about four weeks ago. Born in Batavia, NY, November 13, 1844, Mr. Avery came to Marshall with his parents as a young child. They later moved to Ceresco. He was married to Mary M. Kemp at her parents' home in Decatur on April 14, 1866, and they started farming near Ceresco. They later moved to Marengo township, and there Mr. Avery served as justice of the peace for several terms. They have lived in Marshall for the last 19 years. The survivors include the widow, Mary, three daughters, Mrs. James Raymond at home, Mrs. L. J. Baker of Albion and Mrs. W. H. Christman of Springfield, Ohio and four sons, O. H. Avery and Charles Avery of Jackson, L. L. Avery of Rice Creek and Fred Avery of Albion. There are also 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Keiser & More funeral home and burial will be made in Oakridge Cemetery. Copyright2004 by Iris Avery Phelan.
