Burdick, 86, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Battle Creek Health System. Wendell was born May 18, 1918, in Gotebo, Oklahoma, the son of Buell and Mary (Oursler) Burdick. He came to Battle Creek in 1922 from Oklahoma. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1937 and lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. He was a veteran serving in the Army from May 13, 1944 to Nov. 16, 1947. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with two bronze service stars and a Purple Heart. He had been employed by Union Steam Pump Company and United Shirt Store, and then was employed by Clark Equipment Company as a drafting engineer for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and their couples club; Clark retirees club; Western Michigan Brittany Spaniel Club, of which he held several offices; life member of Efferd Lynn D.A.V. Chapter 7; and a life member of the NRA. Wendell was an avid deer and bird hunter and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was united in marriage to Doris LaBar on Dec. 29, 1939, which ended in divorce, and to Elizabeth Horosko on Oct. 19, 1946. She preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 1982. Also preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Kenneth W. Burdick in 1976 and Donald B. Burdick in 1995; and a great-grandson, David J. Burdick, in 1992. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Marjorie K. (Miller) Madsen Burdick; sons, W. D. "John" (Ruth) Burdick of Burlington, Robert L. (Sharon) Burdick of Villages, FL, and Michael J. (Karrie) Burdick of Bohman; daughter, Marietta K. (Richard) Gandy of Three Rivers; stepdaughter, Diane K. (Madsen) Markham of Redford; fourteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held after 12:00 noon today, Apr. 5, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with family present from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Apr. 6, 2005, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
