Undersheriff Foley Suffers Heart Attack. Edward W. Foley, 65, of 49 Wendell St., Calhoun County undwesheriff since 1951, died unexpectedly at 7:10 p.m. yestrday, shortley after arrival at a local hospital. Mr. Foley had worked as usual and was taken ill after returning to his home. Cornoner Ralph said that death was from a heart attack. It was after the resignation of Ray Pursell as undersheriff in May 1851, that Mr. Foley was made acting undersheriff, receiving the permanent appiontment from late Sheriff Fred Hollingswoth in Octobert 1951. Although Mr. Foley had been ill with a heart ailment serberal times in the last few years, he had not been ill recently. He had been with the sheriff's department since October, 1941, when he joined the force as a deputy. Before that, for a short period, he operated a grovery store on Maine Steet. Mr. Foley came to Battle Creek about 1918 after living biefly in Kalamazoo. For 18 years he was employed as a saleman for the National Biscuit Co. Born Sept. 13, 1891, in Plainfield, a Grand Rapids suburb, the son John and Elizabeth (Mangham) Foley, he attended Grand Rapids Schools. He was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, the National Sheriff's Assn., and Battle Creek Lodge, No. 131. B.P.O.E.. Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Haines, to whom he married in 1934; two daughters, Mrs. Jack A. (Lorriane) McKnight of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Gordon (Mary Elizabeth) Bateman of Jackson; one son, Robert J. Foley of la Habra, Calif., and 13 grandchildren. All children are by his first marriage to Dorothy Erke, who died about 26 years ago. Rosary will recited at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at the Shaw Funeral Home, with services at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Philip Church, the Rev. Fr. Gerald A. Owens officiating, and burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
