 Mrs. Vera Haines, 77, of 42 East Ave. North, the widow of David J. Haines, died
yesterday afternoon in a local hospital where she had been a patient since
March 28.
 She was born here, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Lynch) St. John and was
married to Mr. Haines in August 1906. he was a railroader during his younger
years and later was a traveling representative for a coal company.
 In 1926 he and his brother, Patrick E. Haines, founded the Haines Coal Co.
at 85 S. Washington Ave.. They also distruted ice and one time had a fleet of 
16 ice delivery trucks. Patrick died in 1940 and David in October 1946.
 Mrs. david Haines and her sisiter-inlaw, Mrs. Patrick (Margaret) Haines, now
of 117 Magnolia Ave., operated the Coal Business until the spring of 1954,
when they sold the property to the Oliver Corporation, which wanted frontage
on Washington Ave.
 Mrs. Haines was a member of St. Phillip Catholic Church and an sctive memmber
of the Church Guild and of St. Judes Circle of the Catholic Daughters of
America, which she founded in 1919. She was the first grand regent of the CDA,
serving in the state office two terms.
 She was also a member of the Vivians, The Needlework Guild and the Auxilliaries
of the Moose, United Commercial Travelers and the Brotherhood of Railway 
Trainmen.
 She is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Mary Catherine) Werner of
Westwood, N. J., and two grandchildren
