Kent, age 84, of Battle Creek, died on Sunday morning, July 29, 2007, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence of Battle Creek, surrounded by his loving family and close friends. Orrin was born in Battle Creek, MI and was a lifetime area resident. He was the son of Fred and Pearl (Slack) Kent. Orrin was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served his country as a Signalman Second Class. He was the first man to enlist in the Navy in Battle Creek following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Orrin spent four years, mostly in the South Pacific Theatre, aboard attack troop transports and successfully navigated four major campaigns - the invasions of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Pelilieu and Guam-Saipan. He retired in 1985 from the Processing Department of Kellogg Company after 44 years of faithful service. Orrin was a member of Chapter 3 Kellogg Retirees Union and the Kellogg 25 Year Club. He loved to play a round of golf and enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, but his passion was the Detroit Tigers. On October 29, 1947 in Battle Creek, Orrin was united in marriage to the former, Oleta A. Way, who preceded him in death on May 22, 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 half-sisters and 3 half-brothers. At the request of the family, friends may call on Wednesday, August 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. The funeral service to celebrate Orrin's life will be held on Thursday, August 2nd at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. James S. Codde, Chaplain for the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with full, military honors provided by the U.S. Navy and the Fort Custer Honor Guard. Memorial contributions in Orrin's honor may be made to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence, the Calhoun County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.
