Battle Creek Enquirer – Feb. 22, 2002

Mr. Vought has been a resident of Bedford since 1936.
 He moved from Comstock in 1926, to a farm north of Augusta, then to the 
Urbandale area in 1936.

He served in the Army during World War II having attained the rank of Tech 5. 
He enlisted August 18, 1943, at Fort Custer, and was discharged December 20, 
1945, at Camp Atterbury, Ind. Its took basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky 
and battle training at Fort George Mead, Maryland. He departed New York, April 
6, 1944, for England. Waded ashore at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France June 9, 
1944, D•Day (Plus 3). Assigned to the 2nd Armored "Hell on Wheels" Division to 
a light tank company maintenance crew as a Half-Track vehicles driver and 
mechanic helper. He took part in campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, 
Belgium, Holland, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. 
His were the first American Troops to occupy Berlin, Germany from July 4 to 
August to, 1945. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars and 
Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Vought was employed by the Veterans Administration Medical (enter in Battle 
Creek as a Supervisor Auto Transport for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He worked 
for his father on a threshing machine, and then with his father at the W.O. 
Miller Standard and Curtis Shell Service Stations, H.E. Babcock Propane Gas 
Co.; for his father in construction; United Steel & Wire Co.; Oliver Cor., 
owned and operated a Standard Oil station; and while at the VA Medical Center 
worked as an auto mechanic for 13 years and supervisor for 19 years.
Surviving are his wife,; 3 sons;  2 daughters; 1 sister; 14 grandchildren; 6 
step-grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
Mr. Vought was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother Eugene B. 
Vought, 2000, a sister, Verna J. Fleming, 2000, half-brothers, William E. 
Vought, 1969, and Carl J. Vought, 1989.
Donald attended Augusta and Urbandale Elementary Schools. W.K Kellogg Junior 
High. Battle Creek Central High School and applied for High School Diploma for 
Michigan WWII Veterans.
He was a Cub and Boy Scout, attained the rank of life in Boy Scouting, lacked 3 
merit badges from the rank of Eagle Scout.
Member of the American Legion for over So years at the Oscar Brady American 
Legion
Council 253 since 1961, Modern Woodman of America since 1942, National 
Association of Retired Federal employees Chapter #123 since 1962. member of 
Urbandale Homecoming Committee since 1992, American Legion Bowling League since 
1980, American Bowling Congress since 1970, former member of Moose Lodge,  AFGE 
Local 1626, VAMC Employees Association, and Urbandale Methodist Church as a 
youth. He had served on the National Cemetery Honor Guard for the Wednesday 
squad since March 1994

Mr. Vought enjoyed doing yard work, vegetable and flower gardening, making 
wine, feeding b birds and squirrels, camping fishing, pheasant hunting, 
bowling, baseball, mechanical repairs, maintenance and carpenter work, dancing, 
country and swing music. cruises, traveling to Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas and 
through Michigan. Also enjoyed photography, walking, reading, crossword 
puzzles, volunteering at VA Medical Center for Patients' BlNGO, carnivals and 
gift shops, working at the American Legion Post on construction projects, 
playing BINGO and horseshoe tournaments. His most enjoyment in life was his 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 24, 2002, after 4:00 p.m. where the family 
will be present from 4:00 -6:00 p.m., Funeral services will be Monday, February 
25, 2002, 12:30 p.m. at Bachman Funeral Chapel with Pastor James Robbers, 
Fulton Christian Church officiating.
Interment in Fort Custer National Cemetery.
