First a little history of the school, The brick school was finished in 1871, It replaced an old "Board School" that was located near V Dr. North and 26 1/2 Mi road. about a half mile north of Duck Lake. The new building was fitted with a white stone that read, District No. 4 1871. That stone was read by hundreds of people until the school was removed in 1961, The land was given to the North Clarence Cemetery and became a nice addition. In 1961, Some of the bricks were used to build a monument in memory of the school. The District 4 stone was set in the front and the old school bell was set in cement on the top. This week (Aug 08) Work has started on a new setting for the bell, It is hoped that the project will be completed by Memorial day 2009. Now comes the genealogy part of the story, That white stone that has the 1871 date on the "front" side has an interesting history on the back side that few people alive today have ever seen That part that has been hidden since 1871 reads: HENRY B. (son of) D V (&) C. BLASHFIELD DIED JAN 18 1850 (Age) 18 Y s 3 Mo's 5 Dy's Note, the stone is hard to read, reading may be compromised. It is supposed that the stone contains errors, thus not used as intended. Additional Comments: A quick search found this family in nearby Clarendon Township Calhoun County, Michigan. A young man matching that description is buried in the West Clarendon Cemetery on M-60 east of old US 27 http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/calhoun/photos/tombstones/westclarendon/blashfie4 025ph.jpg Note , The Sprigport Sigmal weekly has had a full page of genelogy information for many years.
