Hazel was born to Vernon Bradley and Lora Minver (Percy) Convis on November 3, 1907 in Toronto, Canada. Her family moved to Battle Creek area in 1910. Hazel is a descendent of early settlers, Samuel and Ezra Convis. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1926 and married Cecil Dorr Newton that same year. That marriage ended in divorce. In July of 1940 she married Oliver H. Brattian. The marriage ended in divorce. In September of 1945 Hazel married Noel H. Culp, who preceded her in death in October of 1975. Hazel enjoyed traveling, and had visited all of the fifty states, Canada, Panama and Aruba. She also enjoyed making craft articles, embroidering, tatting, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, euchre, skip-boo, bingo and working cross word puzzles. She was an avid out- doors person who loved hunting, fishing and camping with her family. Hazel was a member of the Post 25 Year Club, Royal Neighbors of American and the Modern Woodman of American for more than 75 years. She also attended the Christian Science Church. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Newton) Britton and son-in-law, Owen Britton; grandchildren, Diana (Britton) Tomlinson, Walter Britton, Ralph Britton, Lora Britton all of Battle Creek; Mark ( Tracy) Britton of Gasville, Arkansas; great grandchildren; Mathew, Mitchell, Seth, Jacob Britton all of Battle Creek, Daniel (Angela) Britton and their son, Elijah R. Britton of Lumberton, NC; brother, Orville (Margaret) Convis of Battle Creek, sister, Ruth (Convis) Mitchell of North Port, MI. and many grand nieces and nephews. Hazel had two brothers who preceded her in death, Leonard and Paul Convis. A very special THANK YOU to Hazel’s special loving care givers, who in the last days went many times ABOVE and BEYOND!! – Missy Combs, Mark Sluka, Gwen Clayton, Jolyn Whitcomb, Lee Bunker, Kelly Warran, Bryan Dove and Dr. James Gandy. At the request of the family, friends may call at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home after 2:00 p.m. Saturday, where they will be received from 2:00- 4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2006 at the funeral home with Reader Donna Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Hicks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requested that contributions to the Christian Science Church, Barry/Eaton County Visiting Nurses or a charity of one’s choice.
