He was born in England. Research suggests that James Dowding may have arrived in New York on 3 May 1851. There was a James Dowding on the passenger list of the SS Cosmo originating out of England, Port of Departure Glasgow, Scotland arriving in the USA through the Port of New York. There is no record of James in the 1850 Census, however there is a record of James Dowding in the 1860 Census in Calhoun County. Around the year 1854, at the age of 22, James married his first wife. A Rebecca Jenks who gave him three children, all girls, before her death in l860 in Lee Twp. / Calhoun County. On 27 August 1861, James married his second wife, Mary Jane Langridge. Together they had eleven children, seven boys and four girls. According to Jame's Death certificate, his occupation was listed as that of a farmer. He was 65 years/11 months/22 days at the time of his death. The informant of his death was S. L. Dowding (most likely his Son Stephen Luke Dowding) The cause of death was listed as accidental as a result of a runaway team of horses that appears to have resulted in a spinal injury causing paralysis of the lower limbs, ultimately leading to his death.
