Youngs Cemetery is owned and maintained by the City of Battle Creek.

The Cemetery is located about One Eighth Mile from the W. K. Kellogg Airport on 
West Territorial Road.

How Young's Cemetery Came To Be:
(From Cemetery Records: Battle Creek Township/Pennfield Township, Calhoun 
County, State Of Michigan 1819-1938.)

A contract was obtained of Joseph Young on the 23rd day of May 1854 for a lot 
for a Cemetery on the farm of the said Joseph Young, containing 112 sq. rods of 
ground.

The records read – May 23, 1854, between Joseph Young of Battle Creek, and A. 
V. Cummings, David Young, Milton Gregory, and Levi Stewart, President and 
Officers, Goguac Cemetery Company. $10.00 paid for part of Section 15 in 
Battle Creek Township, containing 112 square rods. Eli Stillson, Notary Public.

The records also show – “Joseph Young to officers of Goguac Cemetery Company 
and their successors, Deed – State Of Michigan, Calhoun County, Registers 
Office. Received 7:00 A. M. September 13, 1854 and was recorded in Book 35 of 
Deeds, pages 657 – 658.     M. D. Strong. Dep. Register.

In the Minutes of an Association meeting one reads – “Voted that the President  
of this Cemetery Company cause the Cemetery to be laid out in lots of 10 by 20 
feet, or as near that size as may be with alleys five feet wide around the each 
lot.”

“Voted that collector be authorized to sell lots for three dollars and those 
who have subscribed to the amount of three dollars shall be entitled to one lot”

In 1918 $200.00 was paid for additional land and on November 3, 1927 the 
Association was dissolved and turned over to the Township Board of Health. The 
consideration being $1.00.

The Earliest Recorded Burials Were In 1836
