Ebenezer Goff left Marcellus Michigan Tue/Mar/16,1859 and went to Decatur. took 
cars for Dowagiac,rainy and cold but cleared off toward night. Wed 3/16 bought 
threw ticket and started for St.Joseph Mo.6 ˝ am, went to twin cites} Hamilton 
Ill. & Keokuk Mo. On the Mississippi river, arrived 3 am at Hamilton Ind. Warm & 
pleasant.  went South. on the Mississippi  NOTICE > I've jumped to Arrival 
Fri 4/15 cool & pleasant, traveled 20 mi to Cherry Creek, near Denver, Co. about 
2 pm,20mi. Sat/4/16 warm and pleasant I went to Clear Creek & prospected-found 
out that the gold mining were a hoax. Thu 4/28 ~pleasant,John [his bro] & a Mr. 
Tuck went into the mountains to prospect, returned without Success The Indians 
swarmed about us like bees. Tue 5/3 ~Pleasant, concluded to go home.  John has 
made up his mind to stay. Left Denver about 4 pm and traveled 8 mi. Wed 5/25 
~rained some this morn, started out & went 5 mi & put our load into the mail 
Station during a severe storm. Traveled 6 miles to the lower Ranch on Little 
Blue. Tue 6/28 ~warm & pleasant, reached Dowagiac  Michigan about sunset. 34 mi.
Wed 6/29 ~warm & pleasant after a light rain in the morn. reached home about 4 
pm  -END-  following are my 'Rogers' words  >>>

Started journey “1859 RUSH TO GOLD” from Marcellus Michigan to Denver Colorado.
March 15, 1859 to April 15 = 32 days of travel traveling west young man…
Actually Prospected for the COLOR GOLD April 16 to May 3 = 18 days; found NO 
gold. It’s all a Hoax!! So they said. Journey Homeward, from Denver to 
Marcellus. All by land. May 4 to June 29 = 57 days of travel east to get HOME.
*over 1,350 miles avg 24 mi per day.    By car today 1,160 mi 17 hr drive time.

EVERY DAY OF THE JOURNEY IS WRITTEN IN MY GRANDFATHER EBENEZER GOFF'S HAND ON A 
LITTLE DIARY!!
