She was united in marriage to Hubert Shelby Canard on Sept. 15, 1947, in Pleasant Grove, Ark. Hattie was a homemaker, staying at home to raise their 13 children. She professed her faith in Jesus Christ and loved the Lord. Her loving family includes her children -- Shelby Gene Canard of Dowagiac, Patsy and her husband Ralph Elkins of Eau Claire, Richard and his wife Becky Canard of Decatur, Betty Shepherd of Florida, Sarah Arlene and her husband Andre Bobo of Kentucky, Morris Canard of Dowagiac, Wilma and her husband Jack Miller of Knox, Ind., Judy and her husband Mitchell Huizenga of Dowagiac, Nick and his wife Michelle Canard of Georgia, Mike Canard of Arkansas, Jackie and her husband Jimmy Reed of Dowagiac, and Tommy Canard of Dowagiac; 27 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her sisters -- Marie Thompson of Dowagiac, Rovillie Fulks of Mountain View and Alice Toney of Dowagiac; and her brother, Doyle Richardson of Lebanon, Ind. Hattie passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Shelby Canard, in 1969; her son, Bobby Doyle Canard, on April 3, 2004; her grandson, Paul Canard; and two brothers, Ray and Leonard Richardson. Hattie's family will visit with friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at Groner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Dowagiac, where her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26.
