Prominent Cass County Man Dies
Fred Russ, 81, Was a Banker, Philanthropist

CASSOPOLIS, April 11—[Special] Fred Russ, 81, banker and philanthropist who
donated the 580-acre Russ forest to Michigan State college, died at 1:25 a.m.
today at Pawating hospital, Niles.  He had been at the hospital since March 30.
	He was born in Berrien county, the son of Hiram E. and Helen Valentine Russ. 
He married Annie Paddock in 1896 and was a Cassopolis resident for the past 35
years.  Surviving are his wife and two grandchildren.  His best known
philanthropies (continued on Page Two) were two donations of land to schools. 
In memory of his son, Eugene, who died in November, 1936, Russ gave the
Cassopolis high school the Russ Memorial Athletic field, which he had purchased
for $10,000.
	He presented the MSC forestry department with the 580-acre tract, much of it
virgin timber, in 1942. The land, known then as “Newton’s Woods,” was bought by
Russ for $40,000 in 1935 and operated by him as a tulip tree nursery until 1942.
It is used by forestry students as a laboratory.
	For several years Russ was president of the Cass County State bank and a
director of Associates Investment company, of South Bend.
	Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Place of the services has not
been announced.  Friends may call at the Connelly funeral home here after 7 p.m.
today.
