(Microfilm, Niles District Library) CROSSED THE RIVER SUDDEN DEATH AT DOWAGIAC OF SPAFFORD TRYON—ONE OF THE BEST CHANCERY LAWYERS IN MICHIGAN Telegrams Received Announce the Death of the Well-Known Barrister—Stricken At His Home and Unable to Grasp with the Grim Monster, Death,--Deplored by Niles Bar. Telegrams received this morning announce the sudden death, at Dowagiac, of the Hon Spafford Tryon. Apparently in his usual health, he returned to his home last evening and in a few minutes was stricken with heart complaint, and before medical aid could be had, was a corpse. Mr. Tryon was, without hardly an exception, perhaps barring Col. Edward Bacon of Niles, and D.J. Atwell of Dowagiac, the most learned chancery lawyer in Southern Michigan. It was a grand treat for Court visitors to listen to the wisdom of Mr. Tryon’s words in his talks to the jury. Truly, the Southern Michigan bar has lost one of its most valued and esteemed members. Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been completed, but it is probable that when they do occur Niles and all other cities and villages in the Fourth Congressional District will be represented. He had been ailing for the last three months, but was apparently recovering. Mr. Tryon had been repeatedly cautioned by his physicians and friends to cease his labors, but with that strong constitution and heroism known only to one of his grit, he continued his practice of the law. Mr. and Mrs. Tryon rode out to their fine farm Tuesday evening, returning about dark. He was in good spirits and greeted his many friends on the trip. On his return home he read and chatted with his wife until 11 p.m. After she retired she urged him also to retire, but some implicate legal question held him to his books. While engaged thus he was taken with cramps in the stomach, and although Dr. McMaster was immediately summoned, died at 3 o’clock this morning. Mr. Tryon was about 60 years of age. Resquisat[sic] in pace. The Era (Berrien Springs, Mich.), Wed., June 10, 1896, page 5, col. 2 Spafford Tryon, the well-known attorney died at three o’clock this morning of heart disease without warning. Mr. Tryon was in the front rank of lawyers and had occupied that rank for many years. Like the late Geo. S. Clapp he was a man constantly employed in his profession and, like him, was held in high respect by his professional associates and by his clients whom he always served well. Buchanan Record, Thurs.
