May 10, 1877, page 3 Death of a Pioneer Many of the readers of the Republican will recognize the name of Spencer Williams as among the early pioneers of this part of Michigan. Mr. Williams was a native of the State of Delaware, but came to this, then territory, in 1831, arriving on Beardsley’s Prairie, in Cass county, on the 17th of June in that year. He was subsequently married to Miss Sarah Smith, bought land on the prairie upon which he settled and where he continued to reside until his death, which occured[sic] on the 2d day of May, 1877, which was his 70th birthday. His industry and frugality secured to himself and a large family, a valuable farm and pleasant home. For many years, Mr. W. had been an exemplary member of the M.E. Church, and in the community where he lived he was esteemed as an honest, industrious citizen and good neighbor.
