Sanders 1905 – 1940 Lester Howard Sanders was born in Porter Township, Cass County Michigan October 3, 1905,the first of four children of Oscar Sanders and Edna B. (Vaughn) Sanders. Oscar was a farmer in Porter Township and later retired to live in Vandalia. Edna was a housewife and later a waitress and cook in Vandalia at the Shell station restaurant and for a period of time served as a Vandalia correspondent for the Cassopolis Vigilant. The siblings of Lester Sanders were Estella B. Sanders, b. 1909, Marshall H. Sanders, Sr., b. 1911 and Myrl Sanders, b. 1918. On June 29, 1932 Lester Sanders married Doris Belle Steele. Doris was born September 6, 1915 in Dowagiac, Michigan to Fred J. Steele and Lula May (Bryant) Steele. Lester and Doris had no children. Lester spent almost his entire life in Cass County, and attended White and Log Chapel schools in Porter Twp.. Since his marriage Lester Sanders made his home in Calvin Center, Michigan where he had a garage. Lester was known throughout Calvin Township as an accommodating neighbor and friend. He was a well wisher of the Community Chapel Church and often helped them when asked. On Thursday, March 7, 1940 at 12:30 in the morning for an unknown reason, at the age of 34 years, 5 months and 4 days, Lester Howard Sanders took his own life. Services for Lester were held at two o’clock, Saturday March 9, 1940, at the Calvin Community Chapel Church. Services were conducted by Rev. William Edemy. For many years on the anniversary of Lester Sanders' death “In Memoriam” messages were published. In memory of our son and brother Lester Sanders, who passed away two years ago, March 7, 1940. “Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent the voice we loved to hear. Too far away for sight or speech, But, not too far for thoughts to reach”. Mother, Father, Brothers and Sister, 1942. In precious memory of Lester Sanders, who passed away 15 years ago, March 7, 1940. There’s a road they call remembrance, Where thoughts and wishes meet. We take that road in thoughts today, To the one we cannot greet. Written by Mr. Marshall H. Sanders, Sr. and Mrs. Esther R. (Wilson) Sanders, 1955. Burial: Chain Lake (Lakeview) Cemetery. Lester H. Sanders is buried next to his parents.
